Wisdom Teeth Removal

"Two's company, but three's a crowd" aptly sums up why many people end up having their wisdom teeth removed.

If your mouth lacks room for this third set of molars, they can end up trapped under the gums or come in at the wrong angle.

If you need wisdom teeth removed, Dr. Jason Streeter at Streeter Dental in Colorado Springs, CO, specializes in pain-free dentistry.

Are You Experiencing Symptoms of an Impacted Wisdom Tooth?

• Red or swollen gums
• Pain, swelling, or stiffness in the jaw
• Persistent bad breath
• Difficulty opening your mouth

How Wisdom Teeth Cause Problems

Dr. Streeter may recommend prophylactic wisdom tooth removal in order to avoid issues like these.

Some People Remove Wisdom Teeth Before They Cause Problems

Sometimes a dentist, identifying potential problems with wisdom teeth on an x-ray, may recommend removing your wisdom teeth as a preventative measure.

Doing an extraction when you are young and before the jawbone has fully developed can make the process easier. Plus, young people tend to heal faster. Acting before problems occur allows teens to schedule treatment when it's convenient, such as during spring break or over the summer.

Wisdom Teeth Removal Treatment Timeline

Each case is unique, but in general, most wisdom teeth extractions are like this:

Our compassionate team provides gentle care throughout your procedure.

Day of Procedure

Our compassionate team provides gentle care throughout your procedure.

Patient Comfort

The dentist will numb your mouth with a local anesthetic so you won't feel pain during the removal procedure.

If needed, the dentist will make an incision in the gum to expose the wisdom tooth. Dr. Streeter will gently loosen the tooth and remove it from the socket. In some cases, he may need to remove bone tissue that is blocking the molar, or he may need to separate the tooth into pieces to remove it.

Completing the Procedure

The socket will be cleaned and, if necessary, sutured closed. Afterward, gauze is typically placed over the extraction site to control bleeding and help a blood clot form. The dentist will also give you simple instructions to follow during recovery. In many cases, you won't need a follow-up appointment after an extraction.
